Nick joined his brother and sisters on Aril 26th, 1967, which was his grandfather Daily's birthday. He was an easy child to deal with. When he was young and sucking his fingers, as a children do, he went to Mom one morning and said "Mom, I am not going to suck my fingers anymore" and he stopped. Study period for him at home during school was always a prescribed time and we were all informed that he did not want to be disturbed.
He was active in sports in grade school and played on a locally sponsored soccer team and also on school teams while in junior high school. They were taught various plays for the positions they were to play, and he would get so mad at the other kids because they could not remember all the plays and would play into his position. Boy Scouts was something that interested him as he could learn so much from older boys and leaders. He and I built and raced soap box cars together.
Nick graduated from Parkrose High School in June of 1985 and in the fall entered Portland State university. He graduated from PSU in 1990 with degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics. He started his career in the computer field by working for Sequent Computers. While at Sequent he was sent to various installations in the United States and abroad. The highlight was being sent to Rome, Italy, for three months. He was also privileged to be sent to Melbourne, Australia, for three weeks. Netscape in Santa Clara was his nex place of employemnet for two years however, he missed the good old Northwest so much; all the camping, hiking, and biking. Finally he was able to obtain a position at Jenkon in Vancouver, Washington, as a software engineer where he was the senior developer on a project for Avon of Canada.
In January of 2003 he was terminated at Jenkon, and at that time he decided to do some sight seeing, camping, hiking and biking which he did because he felt he wuld not have a chance if he were employed again for som time. He joined a group and the toured the Grand Canyon. While on this trip and other camping trips, he became quite a photographer and had a great collection of unusual scenery shots. Shortly after his last camping trip, Nick was diagnosed with testicular cancer and he batteled this disease for nineteen months.
His mother and I moved in to stay with him and care for him throughout all the teatements. Even being very disappointed and suffering from all the chemo treatments, he always had a very positive attitude and tried to enjoy life as much as possible by having us take him on trips to the coast, Mt. Hood, and several parks in the city. He enjoyed having his friends come to see him and having his immediate family with him as much as possible. He had a great sense of humor and at times would say something that just cheered us all up a little. We dressed as characters from Star Trek on Christmas Day 2004 to give the holiday a little twist and add some humor to an otherwise bleak time. Nick good naturedly went along with it all though he was nearly completely bed ridden. He made us all belly laugh when his Star Trek nurse mother accidentally examined him with a fazer!
